YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) – A quarter-mile stretch of Sanborn Road in south Yuba City will get new sidewalks and a bus stop through a $900,000 federal grant aimed at improving pedestrian safety and access to public transportation.
The City Council accepted the funding Oct. 20 without discussion, clearing the way for the Public Works Department to begin preparing the project.
Improvements will focus on the east side of Sanborn Road between Bogue Road and Nand Drive. Plans also include pedestrian crossing and drainage upgrades, city officials said.
The grant comes through the federal Carbon Reduction Program, established under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. The program supports transportation projects intended to reduce vehicle emissions by providing alternatives to driving, officials said.
The Sacramento Area Council of Governments selected the Sanborn Road proposal for funding in February 2026 after reviewing transportation needs identified through its Mobility Zones initiative. The regional agency gathered community input and evaluated potential projects in 2024 and 2025. Sanborn Road was identified as a priority within the South Yuba City Mobility Zone because of its potential to improve connections to transit and community destinations.
The grant covers the full anticipated cost, with $850,000 designated for construction, $40,000 for engineering design and $10,000 for right-of-way expenses, officials said.
The California Department of Transportation will administer the federal money, while Yuba City will manage the local project. Officials said no General Fund contribution is required.
Assistant Engineer Jasmine Solano prepared the report outlining the financing plan and budget adjustments needed to add the work to the city's Capital Improvement Program.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
