YUBA COUNTY, CA (MPG) - Yuba County Health and Human Services has received a $50,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to continue its Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Program.
The funding will support educational outreach, safety equipment distribution and community activities aimed at promoting safer walking and bicycling throughout Yuba County.
According to the department, grant funds will support school presentations, bicycle helmet fittings and free helmet distribution for community members and youth in need. Additional activities will include traffic safety fairs, community bicycle rides and the distribution of bicycle and pedestrian safety materials.
The announcement coincides with National Pedestrian Safety Month, observed each October. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024, including 1,090 in California.
Throughout October, Yuba County Health and Human Services conducted pedestrian safety outreach at several local events, including the Olivehurst Elementary School Fall Festival, Bishop's Pumpkin Farm in partnership with the Yuba County Library and the Linda Leads event with First 5 Yuba.
The grant program will continue through September 2027, with funding provided by OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
