MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - Yuba County Library will mark Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout September with a raffle aimed at encouraging children to get their first library card.

Library Card Sign-Up Month has taken place each September since 1987. The nationwide observance marks the beginning of the school year, promotes literacy and encourages people to explore the services available through their local libraries. Thousands of public libraries and schools participate each year.

This year's national theme, "A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes," highlights the range of resources available through libraries beyond traditional books. Libraries can connect residents with classes, homework help, digital media, job resources and community programs.

At Yuba County Library, a library card provides access to books, eBooks and state park passes, among other resources.

During September, the library will hold a raffle for children who sign up for their first Yuba County Library card. The contest is open to children ages 0-17. Replacement library cards do not qualify for the raffle.

Children and a parent must both be present to receive a library card. Parents must provide a valid photo ID, such as a California identification card, California driver's license, green card or military ID. They must also provide proof of their current mailing address through mail or a digital bill or invoice from the previous 30 days.

Parents may register their children for a library card online. To qualify for the raffle, however, the card must be picked up or converted into an ECARD.

Library Card Sign-Up Month serves as a reminder that a library card can provide students with resources for school while connecting families with educational and community services. The national campaign encourages residents of all ages to explore what their local library offers.
