MARYSVILLE, CA (YSBC) – Wheatland 15, Amador 14 - The Pirates had a physical game that took them a while to find their groove, but they owned the fourth quarter in a gritty victory over Amador to open the season.

Wheatland head coach Andy Fatten expressed to Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports that it was an overall team win and his Pirates show grit and the hard work in the offseason paid off.

Wheatland lineman Brody Karas had five tackles in the second half and a key fumble recovery. Senior quarterback Joseph Franklin found senior wide receiver Aiden Luckett for a toe-touching grab in the end zone late  in the final minutes of the game to cut the Buffaloes lead to one.

Franklin gave the Pirates a 15-14 lead on the two-point conversion and senior Dylan Hudson sealed the Wheatland win with an interception on the ensuing drive.

The Pirates travel to El Dorado on Friday for another physical battle as they take on Union Mine.

East Nicolaus 15, Linden 7 - The Spartans began the 2026 season against a Sac-Joaquin Section finalist on the road in Linden.

East Nicolaus had a 7-0 lead at the end of the first half and their defense flustered the Lions offense all-night long.

Spartans head coach Josh Appelt told YSBC that the defense applied heavy pressure against Linden as they had five sacks overall in the win.

Offensively, East Nicolaus junior quarterback Braden Appelt was able to connect for five throws with 79 passing yards. Braden was also able to run for 40 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown.

Senior Jaxon Angland had no problem having the ball in his hands as he caught five passes for 56 yards and also had an interception defensively.

Spartans senior running back Justin Welch led the game with 53 yards on the ground. Welch also had eight tackles on the defense.

East Nicolaus will have their home opener this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against West Valley.

Sutter 49, Bishop Lynch 28 - The Huskies started off the 2026 season with a bang as they traveled to Dallas and defeated the Bishop Lynch Friars 59-28 in week zero.

Sutter built up a comfortable 29-0 lead at the half at the hands of a powerful offense and a ferocious defense.

Huskies senior running back Losi Asiata had five total touchdowns in the victory (four rushing, one receiving) and accumulated over 300 total yards of offense.

The Sutter defense had a pair of seniors (Ayden Miles and Kristian Montero) with double-digit tackles, two interceptions along with one returned 55-yards for a touchdown by senior linebacker Andrew Barker.

The Huskies spent the entire week bonding closer as a family as their week was filled with practice and experiences they won’t forget as part of the Sutter program.

The Huskies returned over the weekend and gear up for another road game in Nevada on Friday as they play Douglas of Minden. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Yuba City 62, Armijo 0 - The Honkers took care of business as they were expected to with a dominant 62-0 shutout over the Royals.

Yuba City senior quarterback Judah Allen completed seven passes for 138 yards in the air for two touchdowns.

Allen found his pair of junior wide receivers (Dante Lepe and Juju Brown) in the end zone for passing touchdowns.

Honkers head coach Jonah Lessard expressed to YSBC he’s happy that his team won, but was more happy with how things flowed throughout the game.

Yuba City senior running back Hank Watson and junior running back Elijah Smith each ran the ball for more than 100 yards on the ground.

Honkers senior running back Cody Haase found the end zone twice as he rushed for 29 yards and also had a pick defensively.

Yuba City will host Christian Brothers on Friday night with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Woodland 39, Lindhurst 30 - The Blazers came up short against the Woodland Wolves in their season opener last week.

Lindhurst was able to move the ball effectively, but their defense allowed more than 300 passing yards to the Wolves in the loss.

Blazers beach coach Jeff Pierce Jr. told YSBC they need to clean a lot up all around, but the game was different after senior quarterback/cornerback Angel Gonzalez was injured in the first half.

He added the offense took a while to get going as Lindhurst had two rushers reach triple digits as junior running backs Chan Hicks rushed for 91 yards and David Guerra rushed for 94 in the loss.

The Blazers can’t dwell on this defeat as they have to get ready for a rivalry game against Marysville at home.

Lindhurst and Marysville haven’t played one another since the 2021 season, kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Rio Linda 28, Marysville 21 - The Marysville football team dropped its season opener on the road to Rio Linda.

The game was tight throughout the night as Marysville didn’t match the Knights with a touchdown in the third quarter.

Marysville head coach Bert Esposito told YSBC that it was a good game overall and there is still plenty of work to do.

Esposito said they made too many mistakes throughout the night, but also everyone has the same problem as the early part of the year begins.

Marysville will travel a few miles down the road on Friday and take on district rival, Lindhurst.
