MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - The Marysville City Council held a special meeting on Aug. 20 to consider canceling the Nov. 3 election for two council seats because only two candidates filed to run.

The terms of Vice Mayor Bruce Buttacavoli and Councilmember Brad Hudson were both up this year, and both filed the required paperwork to run in the election. No other candidates filed by the deadline.

With two open seats and only two candidates, state election law allows the city to cancel the election and appoint the candidates to full four-year terms by resolution.

Mayor Chris Branscum said the lack of challengers “is really a great compliment to both of you, and I think something of a compliment also to the city itself.”

Councilmember Marjorie Rollins said she was glad Buttacavoli and Hudson would remain on the council because she has enjoyed serving with them.

Councilmember Stuart Gilchrist said it was an honor to serve with Buttacavoli and Hudson, and he was pleased they would continue on the council. He said their continued input would help the city remain well run.

The council unanimously approved the resolution canceling the election and appointing Buttacavoli and Hudson to new four-year terms.

Marysville City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 1.
