MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - A Marysville man was arrested on suspicion of homicide with an alleged hate-crime component after a 46-year-old man died following a stabbing Tuesday, Aug. 11, near a transient encampment in Marysville.

Jesse Stewart, 48, was arrested after Yuba County sheriff's detectives investigated the death of Akili Lewis, 46, of Marysville.

The Yuba County Sheriff's Office responded at about 11:49 a.m. to the area formerly known as the Hollywood Trailer Park near the 200 block of A Street after receiving a report of a stabbing.

Responding personnel provided medical aid to Lewis before he was transported to Adventist Health, where he later died from his injuries.

Detectives determined the assault occurred in the river-bottom area near a transient encampment. According to the Sheriff's Office, witnesses reported that the suspect yelled multiple racial slurs directed at Lewis during the altercation.

Stewart was arrested on suspicion of homicide with the alleged hate-crime. Following an extensive air and dive team search, investigators recovered a knife from the river that investigators believe was used in the assault.

The Sheriff's Office said the case remains under investigation.
