YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - The Yuba-Sutter Freebirds and Vitalant will host a community blood drive from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Bryant Field, where donors can give blood aboard the Vitalant Bloodmobile.

The drive comes as blood banks continue to face shortages during the summer months, particularly for Type O blood.

"While there is a constant need for all blood types, due to a major lack in donations starting in May and continuing through the summer, Type O blood levels have reached a two-year low," Vitalant said. "Normal blood supply levels are around four days on the shelves, and we are currently at two days and trending in the wrong direction."

The organization said the shortage could affect patient care if donations do not increase.

"We need everyone to step up or doctors will have to start to make some very tough decisions. Please schedule your appointment today," the statement said.

According to Vitalant, a single blood donation has the potential to help save up to three lives.

Appointments can be scheduled online at https://donors.vitalant.org using blood drive code 100564194, or call 530-893-5433.

Donors will receive several incentives, including free admission to the Aug. 7 Freebirds game, a $15 Vitalant gift card for August donations using code AUGUST15-2026-V, and automatic entry into a drawing for a vehicle valued at up to $30,000. Existing ticket holders are also eligible for an ice cream voucher. Postgame fireworks will be sponsored by Adventist Health.
