The roof, siding and portions of the sidewalk are stripped from the Tri-Counties Community Center in Marysville on Thursday, July 16, as exterior renovations move forward.

MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - Renovations are progressing at the Tri-Counties Community Center, but organizers say additional donations and business partnerships are needed to complete the project's next phase.

The work is being led by Nor-Cal Siders through its Step Up community initiative. While several companies have committed materials and support, owner Armando Chavez said new donations from the community have been limited.

"Aside from our current partners, we haven't seen any new donations come through yet," Chavez said. "I'm really surprised. I thought more people would step up, so I'm hoping to spread the word as much as I can."

Current project partners include ABC Supply Co. Inc., which donated CertainTeed roofing materials; Sherwin-Williams in Yuba City, which supplied paint; Meek's Lumber, which donated framing lumber; and James Hardie, which provided exterior siding materials.

Demolition began July 16, with crews removing much of the roof, exterior siding and sidewalk surrounding the building.

"Things are going well so far out here," said Chastin Henry, project superintendent for Nor-Cal Siders. "Most of the frame underneath is pretty solid, and we haven't detected any further problems yet, so we're in good shape."

Exterior renovations are expected to be completed by the end of August. Board members and volunteers said the repairs will protect the building from future water damage, improve pest control, strengthen security and prepare the facility for interior renovations.

Plans for the inside of the community center include a remodeled commercial kitchen that could be rented by cottage food businesses and other community groups. Restrooms will be updated for improved accessibility and comfort, while the youth wing will receive new flooring and a classroom or conference room available for rent.

The project also includes plans for a second ballroom and event space with high ceilings. Board members hope the additional rental space will generate revenue to help make the nonprofit facility financially self-sustaining while expanding programs offered to the community.

"This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we are so grateful to Nor-Cal Siders for helping us get this project underway," said Peggy DeHaan, secretary of the Tri-Counties Community Center board. "It's been a long time in the making, and it's incredible to see this vision moving forward."

The community center will remain closed during construction for safety reasons.
