SUTTER COUNTY, CA (MPG) - The Sutter County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers who falsely claim people can pay to have a loved one released from jail through an ankle monitoring program.

According to the sheriff's office, the claim is false. The Sutter County Jail does not offer a pay-for-release program, and officials urge residents to be cautious of anyone requesting money or personal information over the phone.

The sheriff's office reminded the public that law enforcement will never call to request money for an inmate's release and does not accept payment in exchange for releasing inmates. Residents should not provide personal or financial information over the phone. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to hang up and report it.

Anyone with questions or concerns may contact the Sutter County Jail at 530-822-7300. The sheriff's office also encouraged residents to share the warning with friends, family and community members to help prevent others from becoming victims of the scam.
