AUBURN, CA (MPG) - CAL FIRE has suspended burn permits for outdoor residential burning in the State Responsibility Areas of Nevada, Yuba, Placer and Sierra counties due to increasing fire danger from dry vegetation and hotter conditions.
The suspension took effect at 8 a.m. June 15 and prohibits residential burning of landscape debris, including branches and leaves.
According to CAL FIRE, firefighters statewide have responded to 31,489 fires since Jan. 1, an increase of 6,660 compared to the same period in 2025. Those fires have burned 60,773 acres.
With outdoor burning no longer allowed, CAL FIRE is urging residents to prepare their properties for wildfire season by maintaining at least 100 feet of defensible space around homes and outbuildings.
The agency recommends clearing dead or dying vegetation within 100 feet of structures, using fire-resistant plants and nonflammable ground cover in landscaping, and disposing of landscape debris through chipping or hauling it to a biomass energy or green waste facility.
CAL FIRE said restricted temporary burn permits may still be issued when necessary for public health and safety. Agricultural, land management, fire training and certain industrial burns may continue if a CAL FIRE official inspects the burn site and issues a special permit.
