YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - Downtown Yuba City was once again filled with local music on Saturday, June 20, as Summer Stroll returned with vendors, food and live entertainment throughout the downtown district.
With temperatures in the 80s, the annual event drew a steady turnout of residents and visitors who came to walk Plumas Street and shop local businesses. This year, one of the biggest additions was the inaugural 530 Voice Competition, a local singing contest that brought performers and spectators together during the downtown celebration.
The competition featured 11 contestants performing country, pop, rock, Broadway and gospel-inspired selections. Contestants were scored by judges in four categories, with each category worth up to 10 points. The performer with the highest overall score was named the Voice of the 530 and received a $1,000 grand prize.

Malachi Watson was named the first winner of the competition after performing Beyoncé's "Listen." With controlled vocals, powerful belts and an emotional connection to the song, Watson appeared to hold the crowd's attention throughout the performance.
The contest, sponsored by Peach Tree Health, was hosted by Chris Rey Carothers of Results Radio. Judges included Sara Guerrero, a veteran musician and member of Missing Gray, a Marysville-based country band; Alexandria Jones, a local singer who performs at events across California; and Yuba City Mayor Marc Boomgaarden.
The 530 Voice Competition added another stage to an already music-filled Summer Stroll. In addition to the main stage performances, music could be heard along Center Street, inside downtown businesses and at venues such as Hooligans.
“I just want to thank everyone who put this event together,” said competitor Kyra Aldridge. “I think it’s awesome for our area.”
