YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 8 p.m. May 22 to 2 a.m. May 23 at an undisclosed location in Yuba City.
Sheriff’s officials said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing areas with a history of crashes involving impaired drivers.
The checkpoint aims to improve public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers from local roadways, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Officials reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and cannabis can also affect driving ability and judgment.
Although cannabis use is legal in California for medicinal and recreational purposes, driving under the influence of cannabis remains illegal.
Drivers arrested for DUI can face penalties that include an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license for a first offense, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Funding for the checkpoint comes from a California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program grant. The program supports education, prevention and enforcement efforts aimed at reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety throughout California.
