YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint on May 1 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city of Yuba City.
Officials said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes. The effort aims to improve public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The Sheriff’s Office said impaired driving includes more than alcohol use. Certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and cannabis can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. While marijuana use is legal in California, driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
Drivers arrested for DUI can face significant penalties. A first offense can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant through the California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program. The program supports education, prevention and enforcement efforts aimed at reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety statewide.
