YUBA-SUTTER COUNTIES, CA (YSBC) - The second annual NorCal Classic Spring Break tournament concluded on Wednesday, April 8 as four-local area baseball teams competed in the nine-team tournament.

The four schools that participated were Marysville, River Valley, Wheatland and Yuba City.

Three of the four teams (River Valley, Yuba City and Wheatland) won at least two games throughout the tournament and Marysville went 1-2-1 throughout their four games played.

Marysville

The younger Indians squad may have come away with one victory in four opportunities during the tournament, but they were competitive and were in each of their games.

Marysville had a hard fought defeat to River Valley in the tournament opener. The Indians had an early 5-3 advantage after the first couple innings after they had multiple runs-batted-in (RBI) singles.

The Falcons fought back and had a five-running in the fifth that gave them a 9-5 lead. The Indians scored four in the sixth, but ended up losing 10-9.

Marysville finished off the first day of the tournament with a tie against Yreka. Indians sophomore Antonio Torrez gave up three in the first inning, but senior Joe Harden dealt the final six innings and shut down the Miners offense.

Harden allowed five hits and one run over the final-six frames of the game. Harden and junior John Slayer led Marysville with two hits during the tie.

The Indians picked up their lone win against Lassen where senior Taegan Jung gave up five runs over four innings on the mound, but his two hits along with freshman Jameson Holt aided the 7-5 win.

Marysville junior Julien Johnson pitched the final-three innings and allowed just one hit to secure the Indians victory.

The Indians finished off the tournament with a 3-2 defeat against Vista del Lago (Folsom), who won three games throughout the tournament.

River Valley

River Valley started the tournament on a hot note where they went 2-0 on the first day of the tournament with a 10-9 win against Marysville and a 6-5 walk off win over Yreka.

Falcons senior Talen Martin delivered a two-run triple that gave River Valley a small edge over Marysville and fellow senior Gonzalo Tavares delivered the walk-off single to give the Falcons the perfect record on the first day of the tournament.

River Valley struggled offensively over the final two days of the tournament as they scored a pair of runs against Pioneer Valley League powers (Lincoln and Wheatland).

Defensively, errors hurt the Falcons in the two losses as they committed eight of 12 total over the final two games.

River Valley has a week off of Foothill Valley League play and will travel to Fair Oaks on Monday, April 20 to take on Del Campo.

Wheatland

Wheatland split during the tournament as they went 2-2 overall with wins over Yreka and River Valley.

The Pirates had a rough first day of the tournament as they dropped close games to Vista del Lago and Yuba City in the opening games.

Wheatland had an opportunity to win the first game against Vista del Lago late but with the bases loaded in the ninth, it wasn’t enough to pick up the win.

In the defeat to Yuba City to end the first day of the tournament, the Pirates were held to two hits in the loss.

Wheatland picked up their first win of the tournament with a 5-3 win against Yreka where senior Chase Barton tossed 4 ⅔ on the mound and picked up the win.

Barton surrendered three runs off three hits, but struck out three. Pirates junior Brodee Malecha relieved Barton in the fifth and owned the Miners lineup for the final seven outs of the game.

Malecha allowed just one hit and punched out four to pick up the first victory of the tournament for Wheatland.

The Pirates had a 4-0 lead in the fourth as senior Jordan James hit a sacrifice fly and junior Kale Nakamura hit an RBI single for the small lead against Yreka. Nakamura was the lone pirate with multiple hits in the win.

Wheatland closed out the tournament with a dominant win over River Valley where they capitalized on errors, but added double-digit hits. The Pirates had a trio that collected multiple hits in the win (Nakamura, Malecha and freshman Israel Cortez.)

Yuba City

Yuba City went 2-1 in the tournament and played three games due to the adjustment of the tournament going from 10 to eight teams throughout the tournament.

Yuba City opened the tournament with a lights-out pitching performance from junior Josh Dalpoggetto. Dalpaggetto tossed a complete-game shutout where he only allowed one hit and sent seven Pirates back to the bench on strikes.

The Honkers fell to Vista del Lago to finish off the first day of the tournament with a 8-3 defeat to the Eagles.

VDL had a four-run seventh inning that propelled them to victory against Yuba City.

The Honkers concluded the tournament with a 10-0 win against Lassen.

Yuba City was up four runs after two, but a five-run fifth inning boosted the defending NorCal Division II champions to a nine/run lead before they walked it off with a balk in the sixth.

Eight different hitters and senior Wyatt Lane was the lone Honker with multiple hits in the win.

Yuba City had a big FVL series against Del Campo this week as they continue to make a push for the postseason.
