YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - Yuba City police have released body camera and 911 audio footage from a Feb. 26 officer-involved shooting involving a man authorities said was acting erratically and later armed himself with a shovel.

The incident occurred around 9:16 a.m. near Wild River Drive and Rapid Falls Drive, according to a narrated video released by Yuba City Police Chief Jim Runyen.

Police said multiple 911 callers reported a naked man running through the neighborhood near a dog park and behaving erratically. Additional callers reported that the same individual allegedly assaulted a family member and forced entry into a residence by ramming the front door with his head.

Officers identified the man as 31-year-old Guillermo Figueroa. Two officers responded to the area and located him, leading to a brief foot pursuit. Police said Figueroa initially surrendered in the front yard of a nearby home but became combative as officers attempted to take him into custody.

Body camera footage shows officers giving repeated commands for Figueroa to get on the ground while attempting to restrain him. Police said officers used less-lethal options, including a Taser and baton, but were unable to subdue him.

The situation escalated when Figueroa moved into a backyard, where police said he armed himself with a shovel and swung it at officers multiple times.

“As a result, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Runyen said in the video narration.

Police said Figueroa continued to resist after being shot before officers took him into custody. Officers provided emergency medical aid at the scene before he was transported to a Sacramento-area hospital, where he remained in critical but stable condition, according to police.

Runyen said the department released the footage as part of its commitment to transparency. He added that body-worn camera footage provides a limited perspective and may not capture everything officers experienced during the incident.

The video contains graphic images and strong language, and viewer discretion is advised. The investigation remains ongoing and will include a review of evidence and statements from officers and witnesses, police said.
