MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - Community members, local officials and law enforcement gathered March 26 at Veterans Memorial Park to honor fallen Marysville Police Officer Osmar Rodarte, marking one year since his death in the line of duty with the unveiling and dedication of a memorial bench.

The ceremony, held at 8:30 a.m. at the park on Fifth Street, drew residents who came to pay their respects and reflect on Rodarte’s service and sacrifice. A moment of silence was observed at approximately 8:42 a.m.

The memorial bench is part of a broader community effort to create lasting tributes across Marysville, led by local student William Curry as part of his Ridgeline Award project through Trail Life USA Troop 19.

Marysville Mayor Chris Branscum and Police Chief Vance Nabeta were among those who spoke, alongside Curry, who helped bring the project to life. City officials said the effort honors Rodarte’s legacy and highlights the role of local youth in preserving it.

“These benches are meant to be places where people can sit, reflect and remember the courage it takes to serve others,” Curry said in a statement.

Additional support came from students at Yuba County Career Preparatory Charter School, who worked under the guidance of Yuba County Supervisor Renick House to help construct the bench. House said the students dedicated months of work to the project, calling it an honor.

Following the morning ceremony, the remembrance continued with an evening candlelight vigil at the Marysville Police Department. Dozens attended.

“Thank you to all those who joined us yesterday to honor Officer Rodarte,” the department said in a statement. “Our hearts are warmed by the support shown by so many. His spirit lives on through those who remember him.”

The memorial bench now stands at Veterans Memorial Park as a permanent tribute to Rodarte’s service and sacrifice.
