The Spartans leading scorer Makinze Massey tossed in 22 points to lead East Nicolaus to a victory over Colusa on Jan. 30.

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – With 52 fouls assessed in the 32-minute game, it wasn’t pretty, however the East Nicolaus girls’ basketball team was able to outlast the RedHawks and prevail 50-47 in a Sacramento Valley League game played on Jan. 30.

Despite being plagued by foul trouble, the Spartans were able to hold an advantage throughout although things did get a little too close for comfort down the stretch.

With both Avelina Machado and Kendall Kocher leaving the game in the fourth quarter after receiving their fifth fouls and three others having four of their own, East Nicolaus played enough defense and hit crucial baskets to stave off the RedHawks whose attempt from beyond the arc fell short.

Makinze Massey, the third leading scorer in the Northern Section with an 18.0 ppg average, led the way with a team-high 22 points, while Kaylyn Ponce finished with 10 points.

It was a nice end to the week for the Spartans who lost to Durham 22-49 on Jan. 26 but bounced back on Jan. 28 to defeat Winters 40-33.

In the loss to the Trojans, Massey turned in a 10-point nine-rebound effort, while Kocher cleared away 11 boards.

Against Winters, Massey logged a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Machado accounted for 14 points.

Now third in the SVL, East Nicolaus (12-9, 5-3) played its only contest this week on Feb. 3 when it hosted Willows.
