SUTTER-YUBA, CA (MPG) - University of California Cooperative Extension Sutter–Yuba is pleased to announce the launch of a new collaborative project with the Sutter and Yuba County Agricultural Commissioners’ Offices focused on the identification and management of invasive weed species in the region. As part of this effort, this project will be coordinating ongoing mapping and treatment efforts and recruitment of stakeholders. 

This initiative will operate within the framework of Weed Management Areas (WMAs), which are designated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and implemented by local agencies to prevent the spread of invasive weeds across California.

To support this effort, University of California Cooperative Extension will host a public continuing education meeting on Feb. 24, at 9 a.m. at 142 Garden Highway, Yuba City, to discuss the management of priority weed species in the region. Particular emphasis will be placed on aquatic and riparian weeds, which are most commonly found in waterways and in proximity to rice production systems. The meeting is open to all members of the public, including farmers, Pest Control Advisers, government agencies and other interested stakeholders, and will feature comprehensive presentations on locally significant invasive aquatic and riparian weeds. Continuing education credits for California Department of Pesticide Regulation licenses will be offered.

Monthly meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month from 3 to 4 p.m. at 142 Garden Hwy, Yuba City, starting Feb. 9. These meetings are open to those interested in participating in the Weed Management Areas. We will be sharing information, planning mapping efforts and discussing invasive weed management strategies. In addition, one priority species will be featured each month as the “Weed of the Month” to increase awareness and promote early detection and rapid response, shared through our social media and newsletters. 

University of California Cooperative Extension Sutter–Yuba invites growers, land managers, agencies and community members to participate in this coordinated effort to reduce the spread and impacts of invasive weeds in Sutter and Yuba Counties.
