SUTTER COUNTY, CA (MPG) - Sutter County Museum in Yuba City has opened a new temporary exhibit, “The Curious World of Seaweed,” now on display through Feb. 21. Admission to the exhibit is free.
Based on the book “The Curious World of Seaweed” by artist and author Josie Iselin, the exhibition explores seaweed’s vital role in coastal ecosystems. Visitors can learn about the history of seaweed in California through detailed seaweed “portraits,” stories highlighting Indigenous peoples’ and women’s connections to seaweed and the ecology of Pacific Coast kelp forests.

Artwork from “The Curious World of Seaweed” is displayed at the Sutter County Museum. The temporary exhibit explores the ecological importance, cultural history and visual beauty of seaweed and will remain on view through Feb. 21. Photo courtesy of the Sutter County Museum
The exhibit examines a wide range of marine plants, including nori, giant kelp, bull kelp, surfgrass and eelgrass, illustrating how these species support ocean health and biodiversity.
“The Curious World of Seaweed,” is a traveling exhibition created by Iselin in partnership with Exhibit Envoy and is based on her book published by Heyday Books.
A free exhibit reception will be held Friday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum. For more information, visit suttercountymuseum.org/exhibits.
