MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts (MCAA) is proud to announce its upcoming production of “She Kills Monsters,” opening Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. for one weekend only. This exciting, heartfelt and action-packed play is produced by the Advanced Drama class and marks one of Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts most ambitious student-led theater projects to date.

This year’s production is directed entirely by students, exemplifying Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts commitment to empowering young artists as leaders and creators. Nicole Podolskaya (Class of 2027) serves as production director, with Bella Wong (Class of 2027) taking on the dual roles of stage manager and technical director. Rehearsals began in late August, and the show features two outstanding ensembles of advanced drama students.

Set in the world of “Dungeons & Dragons, She Kills Monsters” follows high schooler Agnes Evans as she discovers a notebook belonging to her late sister, Tilly, and is transported into a fantastical realm filled with bold heroes, fearsome monsters and the truths Tilly left behind. Through combat, laughter and heartfelt revelations, Agnes learns that relationships — and truly seeing one another beyond our differences — matter more than anything.

At its core, the play celebrates identity, imagination and acceptance while confronting themes of bullying, grief and the importance of chosen family. In a time when young people everywhere are striving to build inclusive communities and celebrate what makes individuals unique, MCAA’s student artists are taking on a story that speaks deeply to the moment: Everyone deserves to belong, and everyone’s story matters.

Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts theater director and instructor Matt DeMeritt and technical theater teacher Geoff Cowan serve as advisors for the production. They share immense pride in the professionalism and vision displayed by the student leadership team.

“The maturity, artistry and leadership our students have shown is remarkable,” said DeMeritt. “This production shines not only because of its story, but because of the students who’ve poured their hearts into telling it.”

In addition to producing, DeMeritt — who trained with the Society of American Fight Directors — has provided fight choreography, ensuring that the play’s thrilling battle sequences are staged safely and professionally.

“She Kills Monsters” opens Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. and runs for one weekend only. Tickets are available at the door or online at charter.mjusd.com.
