YUBA-SUTTER, CA (YSBC) - The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section released their flag football and volleyball playoff brackets on Friday, Oct. 24.

The Yuba-Sutter area was blessed to have multiple teams qualify for the postseason, so as they began playoffs this week, we wished our squads good luck!

Division III

Wednesday, Oct. 29

Wheatland at East Union (Manteca) - Wheatland was the only SJS flag football team that qualified for the postseason as the No. 13 seed.

The Pirates finished second in the Pioneer Valley League with a 9-3 league record with two losses to Colfax and a loss to Oakmont.

Wheatland senior quarterback Ashtynne Agarenzo’s confidence is at its peak as she had the trust in her arsenal of weapons downfield to throw the ball too.

The Pirates were rolling at the right time as they have won their last three games and averaged over 40 points per game.

Division VI

Delta Charter at Faith Christian - The Faith Christian Lions drew the No. 2 seed in the Division VI bracket and it will be a competitive bracket.

Faith Christian headed into the postseason with two losses on the year. Their first defeat was against Sutter in the first match of the season and the second was to Western Sierra Collegiate Academy in the CIVT tournament in the third week of September.

Chemistry won’t be an issue for the Lady Lions as they have been together since the beginning of the summer as all nine Lady Lions on the volleyball roster will be together for the next four and a half months into basketball season.

Faith Christian is a well-rounded group that has the most loyal fan base and the Lions’ Den is going to be rocking for the postseason.

Division V

Buckingham Charter at Sutter - The Sutter Huskies were given the No. 3 seed and are hosting a playoff game for the third out of the last four seasons since joining the SJS.

Sutter was one of two local teams (Faith Christian) that went undefeated in their league and have dominated competition for the last month and a half.

Huskies head coach Elizabeth Bhatti expressed to Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports that they are excited to keep pushing themselves and battled through adversity.

The last time Sutter was the No. 3 seed in the SJS playoffs, they reached the semifinals and earned an opportunity in the state tournament.

As the Huskies are a young group, if they play at the highest level of their capability, they will make a deep push into D-V and bring the school another piece of hardware.

Division IV

Wheatland at River Islands (Lathrop) - The Wheatland Pirates hit the road for the second straight year in the SJS playoffs for the No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup.

Wheatland took on one of the newest small-school powers in the southern part of the section against River Islands.

The Pirates finished third in a competitive Pioneer Valley League where they were led by a pair of senior hitters Lia Azevedo and Isabel Salo.

Wheatland went into the match on Tuesday as winners of three in a row.

River Valley at Oakdale - The River Valley Falcons magical season continued as they were given the No. 9 seed in the Division III bracket.

River Valley ended their playoff drought like Yuba City, as the Falcons made it to the postseason for the first time in the program since 2019.

River Valley had other program highlights this season as they swept the series against the Honkers and senior setter Alexa Campos and senior outside hitter Jada Barr hit career and single-season milestones.

The Falcons may have dropped their regular-season finale against Placer, but they can be a dangerous squad and surprise people in the D-III bracket.

Yuba City at Christian Brothers - Yuba City ended their playoff drought as they reached the postseason for the first time since 2016.

The Honkers entered the playoffs six-games under .500 but a win over Placer in the first half of league play came up big after the regular season.

Yuba City senior setter Emily Smith’s leadership and the power behind junior outside hitter Madison Jackson needed to pack a punch against the Falcons.
