WHEATLAND, CA (YSBC) - The Wheatland Union Pirates girls flag football team sailed through the Mira Loma Matadors 38-6 on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Wheatland’s win on Wednesday guaranteed a third-place finish for the Pirates in the Pioneer Valley League standings as the regular season ends on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Wheatland struck the scoreboard first with a minute to go in the first quarter as senior quarterback Ashtynne Agarenzo found senior wide receiver Skyla Buchanan for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Agarenzo tossed five total touchdowns on the night and distributed the ball to three different receivers in the end zone.

Agarenzo expressed to Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports that the Pirates are a more gelled team in their second season as a program.

She added that their on field play has improved a lot and a lot of more leaders have stepped up in the program through multiple ways.

In the second quarter with three minutes to go in the half, Agarenzo found sophomore wide receiver Addyson Ross for a five-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline.

As the first-half clock dwindled down to 30 seconds, Agarenzo hit sophomore wide receiver Jordan Hill for a 21-yard passing touchdown.

Agarenzo told YSBC she is happy to have multiple weapons downfield and said all of her athletes are capable of hauling in any pass.

“I have the trust in them to catch the ball and they have the trust in me to throw a good pass for them to catch it,” Agarenzo said.

Wheatland head coach Garret White told the Pirates in his pregame to start treating every game as a playoff game.

White told YSBC that the goal has always been to get to the postseason, but a playoff victory is a tally he believes Wheatland is capable of accomplishing this year.

Agarenzo’s stellar passing clinic concluded in the second half after she found Hill and Buchanan in the end zone again.

Buchanan sealed the game as she took a pick six back to the house for 18 yards with three minutes to go in the game.

Agarenzo expressed to YSBC that in the two remaining games of the regular season, the goal as a squad is to stay focused and play Wheatland football.

The Pirates finished off the regular season on Wednesday night as they hosted Center in the regular season finale.
