YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - Shortly after 2 p.m. on Oct. 7, a former Yuba City Firefighter noticed smoke coming from a garage in the 1700 block of Bradley Estates. He reported the fire to the Yuba City Police Department’s 911 Communications Center and then used his training to assess the situation.
The former firefighter entered the home, alerted a female occupant to the fire, and assisted her outside to safety. He then used a garden hose to help keep the fire in check until Yuba City Fire Department units arrived.
Fire crews reached the scene in less than four minutes and found light smoke coming from the garage with a small fire confined to a workbench. The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes. Investigators determined the cause to be an overheated battery left on a charger.
One occupant was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for a non-fire-related incident. No injuries from the fire itself were reported.
October is Fire Prevention Month, and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” This national campaign, led by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), highlights the importance of safely buying, charging and recycling lithium-ion batteries to reduce the risk of fires.
