SUTTER, CA (YSBC) – The Sutter Union Huskies girls flag football team started their 2025 campaign with an 18-0 shutout victory over the River Valley Falcons on Aug. 27.

Sutter took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter as junior running back Audrey Horn bolted down the left side line for a 37-yard rushing touchdown. Horn led the Huskies with 47 yards in the win.

River Valley and Sutter each turned the ball over to one another in the final minutes of the first half, as Falcons sophomore linebacker Peyton Lopez and Huskies senior defensive back Jaime Haase each had an interception.

Sutter had a 6-0 lead at the half. The Huskies opened the second half with the ball and Haase found sophomore wide receiver Zoey Plant for her first of two touchdown passes on the day as they connected for 35 yards.

Haase completed six passes for 82 yards in the win.

River Valley had offensive opportunities throughout the game, but head coach Paul Ruggirello told Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports they couldn’t just get that one play to get into the end zone.

Ruggirello expressed that he was happy with the effort of his team as they did have shining moments throughout the game. The Falcons won the turnover battle as junior linebacker America Arechiga-Perez picked off a pass from Haase.

River Valley senior running back Taylor Ruggirello led the game with 59 rushing yards and had a reception for five yards in the loss. Falcons senior quarterback Kaitlyn Garcia completed seven passes for 32 yards as freshman Marissa Widener hauled in three receptions for 21 yards.

Haase extended the lead in the fourth quarter for the Huskies as Haase found senior wide receiver Sophia De Silva for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Sutter head coach Brandon Supernaw told YSBC it was great to grab their first win of the season in the opening game.

Supernaw expressed to his team postgame that he was proud of them for getting the win, but he expects them to be better over time. He added as this being a second-year program, they have come a long way from their first game last year to this year.

Supernaw told YSBC that he wishes they could have converted an extra point, but that will be a point of emphasis they focus on before their next game.

Both teams will reset the drawing boards as they both have some time off before their next game. The Falcons hosted the Huskies as they were scheduled to play one another in their next scheduled game on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
