MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) -
It’s time once again for Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture to throw open the doors at its Sutter Theater Center for the Arts and welcome into its Art Box Gallery guest artists to showcase their work. At this free event, the paintings and other artwork of two local artists, Kathy Childers and John “Jack” Christie, will be featured.  Come celebrate these artists and experience their varied, multi-disciplinary work. The show’s opening reception will be held on Friday, May 2 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in the gallery at 754 Plumas Street in Yuba City. In addition to a wide variety of thought-provoking art, this event features interesting people, great conversation, and free appetizers and drinks. The artists will talk about their work and what inspires them to create.

Kathy Childers is a mixed media artist. Years ago, she began scrapbooking and making cards using stamps, which eventually led her to create collages. She began with journaling in an artist notebook with a black marker and then created collages on top of the journaling that corresponds to what she has written. Kathy also uses traditional media such as paint and ink and then incorporates found objects.  She makes a “palette” of such things as buttons, napkins, lace, clothing tags, and even broken jewelry. While the words are the initial impetus, the journaling is deeply personal and lost in the finished work.  The elements she uses in the finished piece are organized by similarities or contrasts in color and texture.

Jack Christie is a lifelong resident of northern California. He says he has watched the wild landscapes of the west shrink over the years and he uses his lifetime of memories and experiences to keep his favorite places, animals and vistas alive in his art. Jack paints a variety of subjects but leans heavily towards wildlife and especially the birds and animals of northern California. He finds their ability to survive and thrive fascinating and inspirational. Jack has been drawn to the beauty of wildlife arts since his early years studying at the California College of Arts and Crafts. He also takes on commissions for clients who want to memorialize their children or pets in watercolor. He says the finished piece often brings tears of joy to the client.

The Art Box Gallery is located inside the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts. The reception will also celebrate the work of four Anchor Artists. Emily Cordi loves to create from recycled and foraged materials. She is inspired by the wildlife, nature, agriculture, and countryside of the Sutter Buttes near her family’s winery. Laurie Trent-Butsch creates jewelry from vintage China and she also works with vintage silverware. She discovered a passion for working with unwanted, neglected silverware, bringing these pieces back to life as beautiful, wearable pieces of art that can convey stories of family and love. You will also see original works of art created by former high school welding instructor turned metal sculpture artist, Dude Green, alongside Navy Veteran and retired arts educator, master ceramist Drew Sallee.  Your purchase of a work of original art helps support the artists as well as Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture.  For additional information about this exhibition and the reception, contact Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture at [email protected].
