East Nic’s Makinze Massey dropped in a team-high 11 points in the Spartans loss to Colusa.

COLUSA, CA (MPG) - East Nicolaus remained winless in Sacramento Valley League play as it came up short in Colusa, dropping a contest 42-27 to the RedHawks.

Despite the outcome it was a promising start to the contest for the Spartans who held a three-point advantage after the first period as both teams struggled to find the range.

However, Colusa proved stronger in the paint and took an 18-17 lead into the locker room at the half.

Still, East Nicolaus hung tough in the third period thanks to a pair of threes by Rylee Gillespie and a series of RedHawk turnovers.

In the end though, the Spartans’ inability to finish combined with Colusa’s outside shooters heating up, saw them outscored 13-2 in the final quarter.

Makinze Massey scored a team-high 11-points, although unfortunately for East Nicolaus, only two of those points came in the second half.

Gillespie pitched in with 10 points and did an admirable job making things difficult on the RedHawks’ leading scorer Danica Chavez.

Looking to end a five-game skid, the Spartans (11-7, 0-3) are scheduled to entertain Willows, a team it beat 53-39 last month, on Jan. 14, after press time.
