YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - Center Stage Productions will be performing Disney's Newsies, The Broadway Musical, this August at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts in Yuba City. Inspired by real events, Newsies tells the story of the newsboy strike in 1899 where they fought against the powers of industry giants such as Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. Disney first created a film version of this story in 1992, which was later re-written to become a stage musical, making its Broadway debut in 2012.

"This is such a fun show with great music and choreography," says Corey Kersting, co-director of Newsies. "We have a cast of 28 youth that are really bringing a lot of energy and fun to this production."

Center Stage Productions, part of Yuba Sutter Arts and Culture, was founded in 2022 with the goal of bringing more opportunities for area youth to participate in high-quality musical theatre productions. Last year, the group performed "Seussical" for six sold-out performances. This year, Center Stage has scheduled nine performances of Newsies in addition to six performances of Frozen Jr. "We have had a large increase in the number of students wanting to be part of our productions," Kersting says. "Because of that increase, we expanded to provide two shows for our area youth to audition for this year."

Newsies will be performing on Aug. 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, and 17. Performances for Frozen Jr. will be held Aug. 4, 11, and 18. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit centerstageys.org or yubasutterarts.org.

Kersting says, "This is a great opportunity to see and be inspired by some of the many talented youth that live right here in our community."
