OLIVEHURST, CA (MPG) - Late in the day on June 15, the Olivehurst Fire Department responded to a mutual aid call from Marysville Fire Department to assist in battling the Marysville Hotel Fire. The department’s 2023 Sutphen ladder truck, equipped with a 100’ aerial platform and dual water cannons, played a crucial role in extinguishing the fire at the hotel’s east and north walls.

“Our truck was the only ladder truck equipped with water cannons that can fight fire from two directions,” stated Fire Chief Randy York. Truck 317 is designed to hold two firefighters in a bucket platform at the end of the ladder, allowing firefighters to remain in the bucket for the duration of the fire, thus eliminating the need to climb up and down a ladder. “This 40’ ladder truck is the only one of its kind in the greater Sacramento region and was made possible through the support of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino at Fire Mountain, Enterprise Rancheria, Measure K funds, and the Olivehurst Public Utilities District Board,” said Chief York.

The Olivehurst Fire Department, which safeguards one of the largest working industrial tracts in the region and the only mid-rise hotel in Yuba County, received the ladder truck in March this year. This timely addition is crucial given the increasing number of multi-level houses being planned and the proposed future development of the Forty-Mile Road area.

The department recently acquired a new Type 6 Wildland Fire Truck, significantly enhancing their ability to combat grass and wildfires in and around Olivehurst. Chief York credits Measure K, the 1% Yuba County tax initiative, for the funding that made this possible. “We are extremely grateful for the support provided by Measure K, which enables the Olivehurst Fire Department to safely and effectively fight fires, preserving both life and property,” said Chief York.

Founded in 1948, the Olivehurst Fire Department began as a volunteer fire department and has since evolved into a full-time, 24-hour staffed professional fire service. The department is currently staffed with two full-time firefighters on duty at all times, supported by a dedicated team of seven volunteer firefighters. Olivehurst Fire Department responds to approximately 2,000 calls for service each year.
