YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - The Yuba City Lady Honkers lost their fifth consecutive game on Tuesday, April 18 as they were beaten by the Inderkum Tigers 12-1 In a Capital Valley Conference matchup.
Inderkum was ranked 20th following the win over Yuba City in the Sac-Joaquin Section in the April 20 MaxPreps poll.
The Lady Honkers held their own for the first four innings before the Tigers put up crooked numbers in the final three innings.
Yuba City head coach Amy Olchefske expressed to the Dispatch that she was happy with the consistency of her team hitting the ball hard in play.
“I can look up and down our lineup and know they are taking good approaches and putting a good stamp on the ball,” Olchefske said.
Inderkum got on the scoreboard in the third inning when sophomore second baseman Anyssa Luttig hit a run-batted-in (RBI) double to left field for the early lead.
Lady Honkers sophomore pitcher Tori Hernandez was dealing as she retired nine of her first 12 hitters of the game. Overall, Hernandez pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 10 hits, 10 runs and struck out three Tigers.
Inderkum held the Yuba City offense to five hits overall in the game, including the two captains of the Lady Honkers that made an impact at the plate.
Lady Honkers junior infielder Drew McDonald went two-for-three at the plate with a double and junior catcher Lexi Dell went one-for-three.
McDonald expressed to the Dispatch that they are still adjusting to the new regime under Olchefske as it takes time to get a new routine set in place.
Dell and McDonald exclaimed to the Dispatch that Olchefske has done a lot for the program in the first few months of taking it over.
The captains expressed that Olchefske has put up some new scoreboards, an outfield fence for the junior varsity level, and additional uniforms.
Yuba City (1-5, 0-4 CVC) freshman shortstop/pitcher Chloe Gonzales singled in the bottom of the fourth and beat the throw before the right fielder could throw her out.
The ball was overthrown and Gonzales advanced to second and that allowed McDonald to tie up the game at 1.
The Tigers took a three-run lead after they stringed a few hits together as they were able to find the open holes in the Lady Honkers defense.
Gonzales came in relief in the sixth inning after Inderkum started to pull away from Yuba City as they committed a few errors defensively.
Although the Lady Honkers haven’t won a game since the beginning of March, Olchefske told the Dispatch the girls are still coming in daily and giving their best effort.
Dell and McDonald added that they are doing team bonding with things such as team lunches.
“We have had a group chat throughout the year and that has helped us understand one another a lot more,” McDonald said.
Yuba City got beat 5-1 by Woodcreek on Thursday, April 20. Hernandez pitched a complete game where she surrendered seven hits and struck out one.
The Lady Honkers were scheduled for a slew of games this week as they are in the process of making up games from the multiple rainout games due to the wet weather throughout March.
Yuba City was scheduled to have a double-header at Antelope on Tuesday, and home games Wednesday and Thursday against Woodcreek and crosstown rival, River Valley.
