Marysville senior outfielder Jenissa Conway (13) takes a lead from second base in the Lady Indians 4-1 loss at Sutter on Thursday, March 23.
SUTTER, CA (MPG) - The Sutter Huskies’ softball team beat the Marysville Lady Indians in 4-1 Pioneer Valley League matchup on Thursday, March 23.
Marysville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Lady Indians senior center fielder Jenissa Conway scored off a throwing error from Huskies junior catcher Alexa Carino.
Sutter didn’t wait long to respond as they took the lead back in the bottom of the first inning 2-1 off a fielder's choice RBI by junior first baseman Madison Schamanski and a RBI single by junior utility Madeline Nauman.
Huskies junior pitcher Olivia Bauer struck out the side in the second inning and settled into a groove as she pitched the complete game with giving up four hits and striking out 13 overall.
Sutter head coach Stefanie Danna expressed to the Dispatch that Bauer is more than a pitcher on her roster.
“She possesses true leadership qualities as being the first in and the last to leave,” Danna said. As the Dispatch and Danna were conducting this interview, Bauer was the last member of the Huskies roster to leave the area.
Danna followed by saying when Bauer is in the circle, she exemplifies those leadership qualities on the field.
Sutter may be one of the new teams in the PVL this season, but these teams aren’t strangers to one another as athletes from both teams play travel ball with one another and compete against each other too.
Bauer exclaimed to the Dispatch it can be challenging because they have played as teammates for a long time, but it was fun in the aspect of seeing how one another has grown in their time apart.
Bauer added that when she trusted her defense behind her, it eased her mind pitching. On top of her great pitching statistics, Bauer also went one-for-three at the plate with an RBI single in the top of the second.
Conway led the Lady Indians as she went two-for-three with a run scored and another stolen base as she already has as she hasn’t been caught this season so far in her 11 attempts at stealing a base.
Conway expressed to the Dispatch that positivity is a big quality she preaches to her teammates as a leader on the Marysville squad.
Lady Indians head coach Gabriel Mejia told the Dispatch that he saw his young roster gain confidence on having hard hit balls throughout the field.
Although Marysville is a younger roster, Mejia added the experience of the pitching gives his team things to work on throughout the season.
The Huskies beat the Lady Indians on March 24 to sweep the season series.
Carino gave Sutter the lead in the first as she hit a solo home run as a line drive over the left center fence. Bauer was in the circle for the third time of the week
Bauer surrendered five hits and struck out nine in the shutout over Marysville. Conway went one-for-three in the game as she got her single in the first inning of the game and had a walk later on.
The Huskies traveled to Colfax this past Monday and played a double header as Danna told the Dispatch it was to get the league games in better than waiting for the potential of a game having to be rescheduled again due to the weather everyone has dealt with recently.
The Lady Indians traveled to Pleasant Valley of Chico on Monday and were scheduled to play Lindhurst on Wednesday and this Friday.
