LIVE OAK, CA (MPG) – The Sutter County Office of Elections held a Special Election on behalf of the City of Live Oak on December 7th, to fill a vacant seat on the City Council.
The vacancy on the City Council was caused by the resignation of then Mayor Luis Hernandez and was effective May 31, 2021. At that time, the sitting City Councilmembers had 60 days to install an applicant to the position but were unable to come to a consensus during that time. Instead, the matter fell to the Sutter County Office of Elections and a Special Election was held to allow the citizens of Live Oak to decide who would fill the empty seat out of the following candidates: Jeramy Chapdelaine, Rick Dias, Cruz Mora and Alecs Tika.
The un-official results had Chapdelaine leading, and when the official tally came in, it confirmed the fact that Chapdelaine had received the highest number of votes, a total of 420, or 42.21% of the votes tallied for the Special Election. On Tuesday, December 21st, a special meeting was held by the City of Live Oak to swear in its newest elected official, City Councilmember Jeramy Chapdelaine.
When asked about his new position, Chapdelaine said, “I’m honored to serve my neighbors and look forward to working with City Council and staff to make the progress and improvements the citizens of Live Oak deserve. I know this is a partial term, but I believe this is a great opportunity to be even more engaged with and build a stronger relationship with the public. I know there’s been a lot of conflict and things have been slow over the past year and a half, and I’m really excited to get started working with everybody to find that middle ground and solutions that benefit the entire community.”
The Live Oak City Council regularly meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:00pm at Live Oak City Hall. The next meeting will be held January 5th, 2022, and agenda information can be found at liveoakcity.org.
