Millions of Californians, who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, continue to wait for unemployment benefits to pay their bills

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – Senate Republicans push for permanent changes as recommended by state auditor. Riddled with systemic mismanagement, the California Employment Development Department (EDD) is failing miserably at its mission to serve the people of California in their most crucial time of need. EDD’s negligence and lack of protection against fraud cost taxpayers billions that could have gone into households desperately needing help. Millions of Californians, who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, continue to wait for unemployment benefits to pay their bills.

Republican lawmakers want laws and statutes to be changed permanently to ensure that the crisis at EDD does not occur again. In recent months, Senate Republicans have introduced legislation to reform EDD, worked with the Newsom Administration to clean up the EDD mess, and requested an audit to bring the department’s failures to light.

Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) presented the additional solutions to the Senate Budget Subcommittee #5 members at Thursday’s hearing.
