If you enjoy the written word and the art of film, you will find a community with us
MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) – The Reel Book Society is the new and improved version of the traditional book club. In the Society, we will read a book and then watch a film adaptation of that book to discuss as a group. The Reel Book Society blends book and film analysis to interact with familiar forms of entertainment and media in an engaging way. If you enjoy the written word and the art of film, you will find a community with us.
Most people have a New Year’s resolution that involves taking the time to read more, but the motivation to do it is where it becomes difficult. Community is the easiest way to fulfill this goal especially during the time of COVID-19. Motivation is at a low for many of us who miss social interactions, so let the Society be your friend group outside of daily obligations.
The first question we get is “What will the Society be reading?” and the short answer is a little bit of everything! The Reel Book Society will explore any and every genre from romance, fantasy, sci-fi, young adult, horror and more. Here are the first three books the society will be exploring: Emma by Jane Austen, Holes by Louis Sachar, Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly.
Our hosts for the Reel Book Society are Shawntay Arroyo and London Donson.
Shawntay is the Arts in Education Coordinator and Social Media Manager for Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture. Her love of the written word is obvious by her bookcase crammed with books and her B.A. in Literature. She loves to explore stories that give a unique perspective on daily life.
London Donson has a B.A. in Rhetorical Communication and spent most of his academic career analyzing popular media. He loves stories that compel him to ask questions about society and the complexities of the human experience.
To sign up and join the Reel Book Society, email [email protected]. The group will be starting the first book “Emma” on February 1st, but we will continue to take people throughout the month of February!
