QUINCY, CA. (MPG) - The free personal-use fuelwood (firewood) permit program on the Plumas National Forest (PNF) will be continued through December 31, 2020. Additionally, permits previously issued with an expiration date of September 30, 2020, will be honored until December 31, 2020.

Wood cutters are required to have a PNF “hard copy” personal fuelwood permit (includes tags) in their possession and to follow regulations associated with that permit.

Personal fuelwood permits may be requested by email, mail, or phone; a permit, including regulations, woodcutting area map, and tags, will be mailed to you after your payment is processed.

Email: Download the Fuelwood Permit Request Form from the PNF website, fill it out, and email (put Firewood Permit in subject line) it back to [email protected] . This is the fastest option.

Mail: Download the Fuelwood Permit Request Form from the PNF website, fill it out, and mail to the Plumas National Forest at 159 Lawrence Street, Quincy, CA 95971. 

Phone: Call 1-530-927-9276 (leave a message with your name and phone number) if we don’t answer. We will contact you, fill out the form for you, and then email it to the Forest Products inbox for processing.

Once we receive your request, your permit package will be processed. It may take one to two weeks to obtain a permit, depending on your request option; please plan accordingly.

These permits are only valid on Plumas National Forest lands open to fuelwood gathering. You may obtain permits for up to 12 cords of firewood for personal use per year. A cord is the amount of tightly piled wood in a stack four feet high by four feet wide by eight feet long. Firewood permits obtained this year are valid through the end of December 2020.

As a reminder, commercial fuelwood is not part of the free permit program, and commercial permits must be purchased. Commercial-use fuel/firewood permits and tags are required when the fuel/firewood collector (cutter) intends to sell, trade or exchange fuel/firewood.

Woodcutting is currently allowed within the Plumas National Forest (public land) if the daily fire activity levels permit. To determine if woodcutting is permitted on a given day, call (800) 847-7766 prior to cutting wood. A recorded message will notify you if the next day is hoot-owl (no cutting after 1 pm), open all day (no restrictions), or no woodcutting allowed that day. Note: call before 4:30 pm on the day you plan to cut as the message is updated for the following day at about that time.
