YUBA-SUTTER, CA (MPG) - Four local basketball players from the Yuba-Sutter region were named to the All-Sac-Joaquin Section teams that were chosen and announced by MaxPreps on April 11.

The four players chosen were Sutter’s senior forward Jagger Beck, junior forward/guard Torrence Harter, Marysville junior guard Demi Boykin and Faith Christian sophomore guard Lauren Harris.

The Dispatch had the pleasure of meeting up with all four recipients, and took a different approach from just adding statistics to a generic list. The goal was to have the athletes in a loose, fun setting where they could enjoy their accomplishment in the region with one another, and the smiles and laughter said that it was a success.

All four athletes were also named to their respective league’s First Team, which is selected by coaches within the league.

The Dispatch would like to congratulate these athletes on their accomplishments, and it is known that there is more in store for all four of these athletes. The Dispatch would also like to show thanks to the coaches and parents for the continuous great communication and support of our local athletes from all schools.

Sutter 2024 Forward, Jagger Beck

Sutter senior forward Jagger Beck was named to the third-team on the All-SJS list. This is not the first, nor will this be the last time you see Beck’s name in an edition of the Dispatch, as the three-sport star is a grinder who doesn’t know what a break is like a lot of the Sutter athletes who play multiple sports throughout the year.

Beck was tied for the Huskies’ team lead in points per game this season with fellow senior guard Naseem Bhatti (15.3) and assists (1.3). Beck was named the Huskies’ team most valuable player. His 11.5 rebounds per game were the most in the PVL, and it was a key component in the 63-60 playoff win at Casa Roble on Feb. 13 to give the program their first postseason victory since the 2016-17 season.

Beck expressed to the Dispatch that he must have Skittles on game day, but they need to be the Wild Berry flavor. On the way to road games, Beck is chill and smooth as the R&B playlist he is listening to until it’s time to ramp it up for game time in the locker room.

Sutter 2024 forward Jagger Beck (14) was named to the third team on the All-Sac-Joaquin Section team.

Beck told the Dispatch that one of his favorite moments in basketball was a humorous one during a practice when an individual got so upset, he ended up tripping.

Beck is currently finishing up his final sport as a Husky on the baseball team where he is firing heaters from the pitching mound. Beck signed with the University of Hawaii back in November to play baseball.

Marysville 2025 Guard, Demi Boykin

Marysville junior guard Demi Boykin was named to the third team on the All-SJS list and grew into a leader and was a prominent part of the continued success in the Lady Indians basketball program.

Boykin led Marysville in points p/g (18.5), steals p/g (5.9), blocks p/g (1.9) and multiple shooting categories that include field goal, free throw and three-point percentages.

Boykin and the Lady Indians’ season was cut short in the second round of the CIF SJS Division IV playoffs as they were beaten by West Campus on Feb. 15 in the second round. Marysville had its third consecutive season with 20-plus victories and won a share of its first league title in the last 50 years.

Boykin told the Dispatch her favorite moment of the season was getting the win at Colfax because of how hard her and her team put in the off-season to accomplish that goal. Boykin told the Dispatch that Drake and Lil Baby music is always listened to by her on a game day.

Marysville 2025 guard Demi Boykin (3) was named to the third team on the All Sac-Joaquin Section team.

Boykin expressed to the Dispatch that the best piece of coaching advice she received throughout the season was to just play her game and not listen to what other people say.

She added she loves being a Lady Indian because of the family culture the team provides with the bond and closeness with one another. “It’s more of a family than a team,” Boykin said.

Boykin said that she is consistently improving her defense to uphold the strong defensive presence that the Marysville program has.

Sutter 2025 Guard/Forward, Torrence Harter

Sutter junior guard/forward combo Torrence Harter was named to the second team of the All-SJS list.

Harter flourished atop the leaderboards across the SJS, and nationally, as she was a force across the section and was a nightmare when she guarded her opponents. The 24 double-doubles she had was the second highest in the section and she led the PVL in five statistical categories.

Her highest statistical ranking was her block numbers as she averaged 7.8 per/game, which was the best in California and seventh nationally.  Harter averaged a double-double throughout the season with 13.3 p/g and 12.6 rebounds p/g along with 6.8 steals p/g and 4.1 assists p/g.

Sutter 2025 forward/guard Torrence Harter (4) was named to the second team on the All Sac-Joaquin Section team.

Harter told the Dispatch she needs to either have a Jamba Juice or wear the same pair of socks on a game day. The most difficult places to play for Harter this season were Marysville and Colfax because they were tough. With Sutter moving to the Golden Empire League next season, Harter may not have to play in those tough environments next season.

Harter expressed the spirit is the best part about being a Husky at Sutter because everyone is involved. She added the best coaching advice she received this season was to stay confident, not overthink and be positive.

Harter told the Dispatch that she wants to improve on her shooting throughout the offseason and get dialed in before next season kicks off.

Faith Christian 2026 Guard, Lauren Harris

Faith Christian sophomore guard Lauren Harris was given the highest honor in the region as she was named the Co-Sophomore of the year in the SJS along with Liberty Ranch (Galt) guard Haley Smith.

Harris lit up the stat sheet whether it was in the section or nationally, as well. Harris led the SJS in double-doubles (25), field goals made (327) and points per game (31.2). She was also in the top-10 of the section with three-point baskets made (167), assists p/g (5.5) and rebounds p/g (13.5).

Nationally, according to MaxPreps, Harris was ranked within the top 30 for field goals made (22nd), three-point baskets made (4th), double-doubles (27th), and points per game (18th).

Harris led the Lady Lions to the CIF SJS Division VI Finals for the second year in a row and to the semifinals of the CIF State Division VI playoffs. She also eclipsed the 1000- and 1500-point mark this season.

Faith Christian 2026 guard Lauren Harris (5) was named as the Co-Sophomore Player of the Year in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Harris told the Dispatch her game day routine is the same as she grabs a Costa Vida salad and listens to music. She added the most difficult place to play this past season was at UC Davis in the SJS Division VI final against Sacramento Adventist.

Harris told the Dispatch that she is currently working on her speed and explosiveness to improve her game for the next season. Harris added the best part of being a part of the Faith Christian community is the tightness of the community with it being small and everyone knowing one another.

The best piece of coaching advice she has received from a coach was to focus only on the game and zone into the game.

Harris expressed to the Dispatch that the best part of the season was the Lady Lions’ big comeback victory on Feb. 6 at Valley Christian (Roseville) when they were down by a lot and had a huge comeback, and it was the best team win of the season.
