Join naturalists and artists on a free guided experience in collaboration with the Middle Mountain Foundation. Two trips are planned, one each for March and April. The first will be held on Sunday, March 3rd, and the second on Saturday, April 27th.  Participants will meet at Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture offices, 624 E St. in Marysville at 8 a.m. The estimated return time is approximately 3 p.m.

This is a unique opportunity to enjoy exclusive Sutter Buttes properties on a hike through beautiful rolling hills and vistas with plenty of flora and fauna, with time set aside for nature journaling and sketching activities. These hikes are of moderate difficulty and are not recommended for children under 12. Carpooling is required by the Middle Mountain Foundation as car access is very limited. Trips are limited to 30 people each. Participants must register in advance at yubasutterarts.org. The outing is free, but there is a $10 registration fee which will be fully refunded when checking in the morning of the event.  Art and journaling supplies, admission fees and snacks are all provided at no cost to participants.

This is the second year of free, outdoor nature programs geared toward getting the community outside to enjoy guided hiking, art and journaling adventures. It is all made possible thanks to an Outdoor Equity Program Grant Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture received from the California State Parks and Recreation Department. Why is access to the outdoors important? Nature is a public good that’s crucial for adults as well as children’s health and well-being. Scientists estimate that every $1 spent on creating and maintaining park trails can save almost $3 in healthcare alone. Additional studies show that access to parks and greenspace can increase children’s physical activity, reduce stress in children and improve academic performance.

Following the Sutter Buttes hikes, the next adventure will be to the Table Mountain Ecological Reserve near Oroville on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. The area, commonly known as Table Mountain, is perfect for a guided, moderate to strenuous hike through a unique natural area. Hikers will enjoy the spectacular annual wildflower blooms, vernal pools, and waterfalls. Time will be set aside for instruction in nature journaling, sketching and photography.

Announcements about further outdoor art adventures will be made later this spring. Be sure to pre-register for these programs at yubasutterarts.org or call 530-742-ARTS (2787).
