Meraki Grant Award Supports Women Owned Businesses

Nov 25, 2022 12:00AM ● By Yuba Water Agency News Release

YUBA-SUTTER REGION, CA (MPG) - The Meraki award and recognition is intended to provide financial support to women pursuing their dream of business ownership who demonstrate a passion and commitment to that dream. Women owned businesses who meet the criteria can apply. One $5,000 grant award will be provided at the March 4th, 2023 Day for Women event at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Sacramento at Fire Mountain.

“This award was made possible by the generosity of our community who supported our inaugural Day for Women event last March at a level we never anticipated. Their generosity allowed us to create this award opportunity and we are really excited to present the very first one this March!”, says Jackie Sillman, Day for Women Event Chair.

“The Day for Women event was inspired by the women who have gone before us and the women who will go after us. This event was inspired by all women in Yuba-Sutter who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of others and the community.”, says Jackie Sillman

“In thinking about this award and its inspiration to create it, our group came across the word Meraki” [may-rah-kee] (adjective), which we believe best describes the type of woman owned business we are looking for. The word “Meraki” is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love. To put “something of yourself” into what you’re doing, whatever it may be. It’s those women owned businesses who have poured something of themselves into their businesses, that will stand out.”, says Marni Sanders.

If you are a woman owned business and meet the criteria, you may apply. The deadline for applications is December 31, 2022.

Eligible applicants are women 18 years and older that own an existing 100% woman-owned business with the annual gross revenues of $100,000 or less.

The business must prove gross revenue reported to the Internal Revenue Service 2021. The financial award can help with the expenses associated with education and business development. Applicants must reside in, and the business must operate in Yuba or Sutter counties.

You can find the application at https://www.yubasutterchamber.com/a-day-for-women. Return completed applications to: Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation, 950 Tharp Rd, Suite 1303, Yuba City, CA 95993 or [email protected] by December 31, 2022.
